Frequently Asked Questions

  • What’s a Shop Steward, and what do they do?

Our Stewards are volunteer MWWC members trained by the Communications Workers of America (CWA) in labor rights and our Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) with Meow Wolf management. These designated support people help members navigate a wide range of workplace issues.
Need help with a workplace issue, and are unsure what to do? Asking for a steward is a good place to start.

  • How do I become a Shop Steward?

Reach out to us at info@meowwolfworkers.org for training information.

  • How can I interact with my manager if I’m a member of MWWC?

Membership does not limit how you can interact with your direct supervisor.
Membership provides additional support resources for you in your workspace. You’re absolutely welcome to reach out to anyone in the MWWC for support navigating your job as well as your direct supervisor.

  • Can I discuss raises with my manager?

    Yes! Always!
Membership will never prevent you from bargaining directly for your individual wages, even if you are requesting a rate change not hard-coded in a current Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Note: While a formality requires the union’s approval for changes to a member’s wages, we will always support increased wages for Bargaining Unit members.

  • Can I accept a promotion?

Yes! If you choose to accept a promotion offered by Meow Wolf, you can!

  • I have a meeting with Human Resources (HR) and/or my manager. Can I request a steward?

Absolutely! Weingarten Rights state that you can be accompanied by a steward when being questioned by HR or your Manager, especially in a situation that could result in discipline. If you are in the bargaining unit, you can request to have a MWWC steward join you. This MWWC steward is a fellow Meow Wolf worker, trained to understand the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and grievance procedures. They are there to support you, and ensure the issue can be resolved in a positive way for all parties.
This option may not be openly offered to you, but you can invoke these rights at any point in your conversation. Inform them “I request to have my union steward here for this conversation”, and the conversation must stop until you can be in touch with us.

    • Please reach out to us at info@meowwolfworkers.org if you need support.

    • This right is optional. You do not have to invoke it if you do not want to.

  • What are you doing right now? What can I do to help?

As Meow Wolf continues to grow, we are working to scale our structure and organization to support our members nationwide. The best thing you can do to help is to get involved! Attend meetings, participate in solidarity actions and Committees! Your experience and expertise is crucial to understanding what workers need.

  • What does it mean to be an Open Shop or a Closed Shop? What are we?

MWWC was formed as an Open Shop, this means folks who choose not to be MWWC members wouldn’t pay an agency fee in lieu of union dues.
A Closed Shop means they would be required to.

  • Tell me about dues.

Dues are paid in hours/month. For salaried employees, dues are calculated based on a 40 (forty) hour work week.
The minimum required by the national CWA Constitution is 2.25 hours per month; we voted to ratify this standard into our contract.
    This breaks down as follows:

    • 0.80 Hours Per Month: CWA’s National Operating Budget

    • 0.25 Hours Per Month: National Strike Fund,

    • 1.20 Hours Per Month: Reinvested back into MWWC for organizing.

  • How do you support non-members?

If you forgo membership, you are still provided the same benefits and representation as dues-paying members.
Our goal was to create the best contract we could for everyone in the bargaining unit. Full stop. Your Weingarten Rights are always protected.

If you have concerns please speak up on MWWC Discord or send us an email.

  • How do you support those outside the Bargaining Unit?

Though we do not officially represent certain role at Meow Wolf, we always work to understand the needs of every Meow Wolf employee. We use these insights to form our engagement strategy with Meow Wolf.
Any conditions we successfully negotiate into the contract may have a ripple effect and positively impact coworkers outside the Bargaining Unit.

  • What’s the relationship between the MWWC and the national umbrella of CWA?

The Meow Wolf Workers Collective (MWWC) is proudly local 7055 of the Communications Workers of America (CWA).

This relationship gives us the support and resources of a national union, while giving us autonomy to call our own shots on governance.

  • What’s up with the bananas?

Once upon a time, during an early organizing meeting, a vote was held for [Option A], [Option B], or Banana!  It was late, people were slap happy, and Banana won the vote by a long shot.
What started as a small bit of silliness slowly became a symbol of MWWC funsies and solidarity.
